Rain Worthington awarded First Place in the Anton Stadler Composition Competition

Rain Worthington's composition, Afternoon Reflections won First Place in the Anton Stadler Composition Competition in the Unaccompanied Basset Clarinet category.

Eternal Evolution, a new CD of chamber music by Judith Lang Zaimont has been released on the Navona Records label (NV5846).

Featured works are her String Quartet - The Figure”, Zones – Piano Trio No. 2, Astral…a mirror life on the astral plane...for solo viola and Serenade for piano trio.

Flute Music by Joelle Wallach Performed by Duo Caramaba on March 30 at Interchurch Center in Manhattan Composer Joelle Wallach’s A Wreath of Silver Birds, a suite for solo flute will be performed by Carla Auld as part of the Duo Caramba concert.

Wednesday, March 30 – 12 noon at the Interchurch Center, 475 Riverside Drive in Manhattan.

The piece was written in 1995 for the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in honor of their new gazebo and premiered in July of that year. It was also written to celebrate Otto Luening’s 95 birthday. Other composers on the program are Katherine Hoover, Libby Larson and Tania Leon.

Music by Fanny Mendelssohn, Hilary Tann, Sharon J. Willis, Elizabeth R. Austin, Sarah Meneely-Kyder and Elizabeth Stirling. Ms. Harbach will also perform several of her original works and arrangements.

Admission to the Women’s Work 2011 concerts is $15 general, $10 for students and seniors, with tickets available at the door starting at 7:30 PM.

This will be the premiere of Elizabeth R. Austin's "Wachet auf....der Morgenstern" for organ solo.

Hilary Tann, Composer-in-Residence for the 2011 Eastman Women in Music Festival, March 21-25

The Women in Music Festival is proud to welcome Hilary Tann as its guest Composer-in-Residence for 2011. A special "Tann-retrospective" evening concert of her works will be held on Monday, March 21 at 8 pm in the Downtown Presbyterian Church. This concert will feature the world premiere of "Exultet Terra" for antiphonal choirs and double-reed quintet, as well as chamber works, including the concerto “Shakkei” featuring saxophonist Chien-Kwan Lin.

Growing up in South Wales, the composer developed a love of nature which has inspired all her music. "Exultet Terra," subtitled "Among Thy Trees," invites the audience to consider the beauty, peace, and joy of the pastoral world.

Hilary Tann, who is the John Howard Payne Professor of Music at Union College in Schenectady, will be in Rochester for the four-day residency, which will include open rehearsals and coachings, school presentations, a Neilly series lecture, and a lecture-presentation at the Eastman School of Music.

Other concert programs featuring Tann’s music will be performed at the "Women in Music Festival Tour" preview concert March 24, and a Sinfonietta Cordancia concert on Friday, March 25, with oboist Kathleen Suher performing the “Shakkei” concerto.

The Seventh Annual Eastman Women in Music Festival concerts and events are free and open to the public. The week-long festival, March 21- March 25, is a celebration of the contributions of women to all aspects of music. Under the Artistic Direction of Sylvie Beaudette, the festival has grown to include film, daily noontime concerts with poetry readings, evening choral and orchestral concerts, and a festival tour. Previous years have featured Tania Leon, Nancy Van de Vate, Judith Lang Zaimont, and Emma Lou Diemer.

Accompanied by the incredible Catherine Miller, the recital will feature the works of two New York composers (Mary Ann Joyce-Walter and Alexander Nohai-Seaman), as well as a wonderful song cycle by the French composer, Olivier Messiaen. The music is lush, beautiful, and surprising.

The recital will be held at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, located at 7420 4th Avenue in Brooklyn (between 75th and 74th Streets). The venue is easily accessible by subway (R train to 77th Street in Brooklyn).

The result of many years of work, the book contains nine chapters that focus on nine current composers with different styles, methods, and attitudes -- including different experiences of second-wave and third-wave feminism in music. The book's visionary editor is a composer and associate professor of music theory at Vanderbilt University, in Nashville, Tennessee. Each chapter contains a biography and description of style, a personal interview, and (most significantly) an analysis of a significant work.

This Sunday, January 30 at 1PM, Sophia Yan will be playing Faye-Ellen Silverman's "Two Bagatelles" for piano. This is the first concert of The Composers Voice 2011 series, held at the Jan Hus Church 351 East 74th Street New York, NY 10021. This FREE one hour concert also features music & performances by Jasmin Cowin, Douglas DaSilva, Robson dos Santos, Randall Eng, Caitlyn Phillips, Jimmy Pigott, Angela Scherrah, Gabe Straus, Theresa Thompson, Robert Voisey, Kai Watanabe, and Shelby Yamin.

The Composers Voice is accepting donations of food & clothing for the Homeless Outreach & Advocacy Program.


Piano Music of Judith Lang Zaimont to Be Performed by Young Ah Tak

New York, NY – The Florida premiere of American composer Judith Lang Zaimont’s Wizards – Three Magic Masters will be performed by pianist Young-Ah Tak as part of her concert on Monday, January 24 – 7:30 PM at First Presbyterian Church, 175 Lake Hollingsworth Drive in Lakeland, Florida. This concert is presented by Southeastern University.

Wizards for solo piano in three movements, was commissioned for the November 2003 San Antonio International Piano Competition and was a required work for that competition, where it was given 12 premiere performances. Susan Mardinly will perform Beth Anderson's songs: Nightsong, Lullaby, Wynken Blinken and Nod, The Duel, Kilkenny Cats, The Tyger and Heh Diddle Diddle.
January 20 for the Musical Club of Hartford, at 10am.

Another performance will be March 27 as part of the Hartford Women Composers Festival.

NYWC featured in WNYC *STAR* Initiative.

NYWC has been selected for participation in WNYC's Salute The ARts Initiative (*STAR* Initiative).

Each year, this program profiles 36 small cultural non-profit organizations in the New York Metropolitan area over a 12-month period, through on-air promotional announcements and a free presence on the WNYC website. NYWC will be highlighted as a featured organization on the website during a 28-day period between March 11th through April 8th. STAR.

During this period NYWC will be mentioned in 28 30-second on-air promotional broadcast announcements, scheduled randomly on both WNYC AM & FM frequencies. After this active promotion period NYWC will be added to the list of participants on the website.
