Alexandra Ottaway

I have a big announcement that my CD, Tetrahedron Dreams, three years in the making, went live online April 29th, 2014. Link is here or AlexandraOttaway.com
http://www.navonarecords.com/artists/artists-o.php

My recital January 20, '13 had me singing "The Little Sphinx" a poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay set by John Duke, the late Smith College composition professor. This post-humous song cycle is finished, and accompaniment performed, by Jerry Noble. Audio-Visual by Harry Nault. My brother Jay Ottaway recommends!

Alexandra graduated from Columbia, with a BA in music in '87. During her time there she had 2 chamber pieces performed with Columbia Composers by Max Lifshiz. Later finished her MA in Music Education.

From '92-'02, she taught general music and accompanied adult choruses as well as playing for The New Amsterdam Boys Choir.

She played chamber music from 2000-2007 and wrote for some of the ensembles.

Fall 2011 was a high-point when Harold Rosenbaum conducted The New York Virtuoso Singers on four choral pieces. In late September of '14 they sang four more. Beautiful!

Ottaway also sang The 6 Soprano Merlin Études(on 9-24-13) and two of the simpler Zen Sutras. But any time spent with Harold Rosenbaum's NYVS is nothing short of extraordinary!

The recordings from that day and four pieces of chamber music from '06-'11 are on the CD, Tetrahedron Dreams. The link to my artist page on PARMA's website(I guess, as with all these links, you'd need to copy and paste):

AO's composition teachers were Lawrence Widdoes of Juilliard, Max Lifshcitz of Columbia, Nils Vigeland of Manhattan School of Music, Dana McCurdy at The Institute for Audio Research and Vassar, Keith Fitch and Jerry Noble.

We suggest playing 2 of the songs here simultaneously: Beach House and O-Kyrie. And O-Kyrie can be played canonically.

Mass for the New Amsterdam Boys Choir

Duration:
Instrumentation: Voice, Pn, Fl, Vc
This quasi-Buddhistic meditation on the September 11 WTC attacks,
was arranged by Tomoko Kamawukai, the choir's accompanist at the time.
Her Ensemble TOKI, which consists of piano, flute and cello, accompanied
and Darryl Taylor was the tenor soloist.

I also have a recording of myself singing and playing all the parts in '01-'02,
"O-Kyrie," before it was arranged.

The Merlin Études

Duration: 00:10:00
Instrumentation: Soprano, Piano
This time I got permission from the poet, me! Be that as it may, this is a little unusual because Études 3-8 have soprano solos. The row is from Oliver Messaien's Flute and Piano piece, Le Merle Noir. To be released on Navona.

that's very legato: almost tonal. The first is the second piece of the six minute sampler

Wild Geese

Duration: 2'
Instrumentation: Vln,Vla,Vc~+~Alto~on~Improvox~App~for~iPad
I did not receive permission from poet Mary Oliver to publish this but(perhaps because) I am not charging for it. The Improvox App is an electronic music processor with reverb which adds an augmented triad to vocal pitches. The Alto part is not more ambitious as knowing Oliver's distaste for being set I tread lightly.
Good poetry is already music, so I kind of get it.

Zen Sutras

Duration: 00:18:30
Instrumentation: Soprano, Chorus, Flute, Strings and Percussion.
These are the Four Vows and other Zen Chant-texts: Sutras set to minimal
(for the most part) instrumentation. From Solos to SATB to SSAATTBB.
From very simple almost monotone to bi- and atonal and/or mixed.
To be released on Navona.
